No Wonder Parking Sucks

Car with a boot attached.

This car has been parked outside of the Gessner Science Hall for at least two days. Maybe they can tow him sometime before the semester ends and that can free up a parking spot.

Pennsylvania to receive nearly $1.53 billion for infrastructure

Posted by Andrew on February 16, 2009

From the Pocono Record.

State officials will be required to set priorities for spending the funds, while managing competing pressures from communities, watchdog groups and federal regulators over how the money is allocated.

Under the plan Obama is expected to sign into law early this week, states will divide $27 billion to build and repair roads and bridges. That is less than half the $64 billion in projects states told the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials late last year that they had ready to go.

Its too bad that the big P.A. cities (Philly, Pittsburgh, and Harrisburg) will take all the money, because the roads I drive on everyday to get to work and school need a ton of work. It would also be nice of PennDOT could finish the Marshall`s Creek bypass, so Route 209 could actually be drivable during the summer.

Entry 1

On 1/15/09, the Pocono Record published a story, that said

The State System of Higher Education Board voted 11-2 to establish a new maximum fine that each university can impose, but gave schools the option of setting lower fines.

The new policy allows schools to charge as much as $50 for parking violations and a maximum $100 for moving violations, or more if state law allows.

Its a pretty reasonable policy, because I`m sure the schools are sick and tired of people parking illegally and a 15 fine is not much of a deterrent. On the other hand, I`m almost forced to park illegally if I want to get to class on time. This past Wednesday, it took me over an hour to find a spot and I tried every parking area on campus that I could think of. I know that complaining about parking is almost as bad as complaining about Jose Reyes popping up the first pitch he sees but this story ticks me off. In this case, the school decides to use money as a way to get people to change their ways, yet they have not attacked the cause of the problem. As if tuition and books wern`t expensive enough, they wanna try and squeeze more money out of me without fixing the problem.

Parking was a problem back when I was a freshmen and after 2 years away from class is still a problem. The new science building is a wonderful addition to the campus but building a multi-storied parking garage would be a thing of beauty. I`m willing to go out on a limb and say that it wouldn`t have been that difficult to build a parking garage back when they were drawing up the plans for the new science building. I understand the reasons behind the increases, but instead of applying a bandaid to the problem, the university should make it a priority to find a way to heal the wound instead.
